In 1968, by the time he was 48 years old, on April 4th, Dr. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. In 1943, Frederick was 23 years old when on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S. People liked it because they could hear about the results of the election between Harding and Cox before the morning papers arrived. Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. This was the first commercial radio broadcast in the United States.
